Jakarta, 13 December 2006 - The Business Software Alliance (BSA) and the Indonesian Boards of Commissioners and Directors Organization (LKDI), with the support of the National Committee on Governance Policy (KNKG), held an IT Governance Forum today in Jakarta. Entitled as a “New Challenge Facing Board Accountability: The Importance of IT governance”, the event was held at KNKG’s office in the Jakarta Stock Exchange Building and was attended by the Good Corporate Governance (GCG) group and members of the LKDI.
The forum opened with key speakers Jos F. Luhukay (Chairman of Sub-Committee KNKG Corporation/ Member of Tiknas Council), Isnaeni Achdiat (Partner, IT Risk Practice, Ernst & Young), Jeffrey Hardee (BSA Asia Vice President and Regional Director), and Roland Chan (BSA Asia Director of Marketing). PT Bussan AutoFinance and PT Aneka Tambang made presentations on their respective companies’ IT Governance Practices.
The goal of the forum was to educate the directors and commissioners on the importance of an efficient IT system in today’s business environment. This was the first forum of its kind to be held in Indonesia, and held in accordance with the vision and mission of the LKDI.
“The goal of LKDI is to promote professionalism amongst the commissioners and directors through the adoption of good corporate governance,” said Hoesein Wiriadinata, Chairman of LKDI. “In the information era, where the role of IT is crucial to every company’s operations, the implementation of good governance, such as accountability control and transparency, is crucial.”
Speaking on behalf of the BSA, Jeffrey Hardee, Vice President and Regional Director, Asia Pacific, said, “Being the foremost organization dedicated to promoting a safe and legal digital world, the BSA is fully supportive of the efforts of KNKG and LKDI in promoting better IT governance in Indonesia. As an essential part of corporate governance as a whole, better software asset management will lead to a better return on IT investments and productivity.”
One of the key factors that could determine the competitiveness of a nation in a global economy is its productivity. The 1997 monetary crisis has proven that companies which implemented GCG principals can survive an economic downturn because they have a stronger economic foundation. Part of KNKG’s role as a formal institution is to promote GCG principals in the private and government sectors.
“The biggest challenge facing the BSA today is corporate end-user piracy, where a company uses more software than it has purchased licenses for. Not only is this against the copyright law of the country, it is bad business practice. The forum held today seeks to remind businesses that software is a productivity tool, and must therefore be respected and managed just like any other important asset in a company.”
