Thai Ministry of Commerce and BSA partner on Software Policy Summit
Forum to focus on opportunities and challenges facing the software industry in Asia and building of knowledge economies

Bangkok, September 7 2001 The Thai Ministry of Commerce (MOC) and the Business Software Alliance (BSA) today announced joint sponsorship of this year’s Software Policy Summit (SPS), which will take place in Bangkok from September 23rd to September 26th. The aim of the Summit is to examine the challenges and opportunities facing the information technology industry at the beginning of the new millennium.

The Software Policy Summit attracts highly regarded speakers from the region and around the world, and attendees will include key principals and policy makers from the Asia pacific region including senior government, industry, non governmental organisations and multilateral institution representatives. As many as fourteen countries will be represented and 200 delegates are expected to attend the Summit.

“The information technology industry, and software development in particular has been a remarkable engine for economic growth around the world and its impact has increasingly benefited the economies of South East Asia as regional markets participate more fully in the global ‘knowledge economy’,” said Mr Thawatchai Sophastienphong, Deputy Director General, Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Commerce. “Thailand recognises the pivotal role that software plays in the information economy and is delighted to be a co-host for this year’s Software Policy Summit.”

The SPS will provoke discussion around three key areas of opportunity and challenge facing the information technology industry, e-commerce, intellectual property protection and creating digital opportunities (or addressing the digital divide).

“The BSA is pleased to be involved in facilitating and engaging policy makers on these important issues,” said Jeff Hardee, Vice President and Regional Director of the BSA. “Software companies drive the expansion of the global information infrastructure and enhance the economic growth of this region. In order to foster an environment for a sustainable and growing IT industry and in turn, the information economy, it is fundamental to ensure a secure on line environment and protection of intellectual property rights.”
